masters
it is a traveling workshop through 12 italian cities where light becomes the guide and language of the project.
students explore light as an architectural, artistic, and functional element, thanks to the direct study of public, monumental, and interior lighting, such as museums, libraries, shops, and religious places. each city is an opportunity to study the relationship between light, space, architecture, needs, and habits of the men and women who inhabit them.

access requirements

to access the aptitude interview and the admission test, a bachelor's degree is required. a b1 level of english proficiency is also required, necessary for consulting study materials and interacting with international professionals.

a basic knowledge of lighting design software is required, essential for tackling the analyses and practical applications planned in the course.

the following will also be evaluated:

  • observation and analysis skills, fundamental for interpreting light in its real contexts
  • aptitude for field experimentation, with a willingness to work in dynamic and itinerant situations
  • autonomy in research and documentation, with particular attention to the representation and communication of the project

final project: scrittoridellaluce

the course concludes with the development of an individual thesis project. a work that represents the synthesis of acquired knowledge, the ability to observe and transform light into thought, space, and vision.

master's subjects

  • philosophy of light and visual narration: exploration of light as a language and narrative tool in spaces.
  • technology and lighting design: use of software for light calculation and design.
  • perception theory: study of the interaction between light and human perception.
  • graphic representation and visual communication: representation techniques to visualize and communicate design ideas.
  • preparation for practical design: exercises to apply theory in urban contexts during the itinerant phase.
  • light in urban contexts: direct study of light in urban spaces, museums, religious places, and commercial environments during city visits.
  • light and photography: study and application of photography to document the effect of light in spaces.
  • history of art and architecture: history of art and architecture in the places visited.

course structure

the master's program is divided into two complementary phases:

  • theoretical phase (first months) → classroom lessons to build the conceptual and technical foundations on philosophy of light, history, physics, mechanics, materials, and visual representation.
  • itinerant phase (second part) → journey through 12 italian cities, with on-site lessons, observation workshops, and direct experimentation. the cities involved will be: turin, milan, genoa, bologna, verona, venice, florence, rome, naples, bari, palermo, nuoro.

activities take place on alternate weekends, to allow students to integrate their studies with other professional or research activities.

viaggandopercostruirsi is a master's program that arises from direct experience, from contact with cities, from light observed in its most authentic contexts. 12 italian cities become classroom, study space, territory of investigation. knowledge is not confined to one place, but moves, grows, and transforms through observation and experimentation. a program that combines philosophy, art, physics, technology, history, and design, with an interdisciplinary and laboratory approach. the method is that of research: look, analyze, understand, build. each city offers an opportunity for study and reflection on light as a physical phenomenon, artistic expression, and universal language.
